Edmonton – Today, Wild + Pine President and CEO Chris Kallal announced the Alberta-based climate change action provider has become a Certified B Corporation, more commonly known as a B Corp. The designation signifies that a business balances purpose with profit. B Corp’s are legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on their workers, community, and the environment.

“Wild + Pine is honoured to join the ranks of such an impressive group of environmentally responsible, socially conscious companies,” said Kallal. “We are committed to driving effective change while making a sustainable and lasting impact.”

Wild + Pine is one of Canada’s emerging Nature-based Solutions providers, using advanced eco-technologies to deploy reforestation programs that restore Canadian landscapes for climate resiliency. The company is now one of only 24 B Corp’s in Alberta, and just the eighth in Edmonton.

To certify as a B Corp, a company must achieve a minimum verified score of 80 points on the B Impact Assessment. The B Impact Assessment asks questions about how the day-to-day operations of a company create positive impact for the company’s workers, community, and environment. Scores for Certified B Corporations are verified by the non-profit B Lab. Wild + Pine received an impressive score of 123.3 points. By way of comparison, the median score for an ordinary business is 50.9 points. Wild + Pine’s performance in their assessment comfortably positions them next to global leaders in the space.

“Today’s announcement marks an exciting new chapter for Wild + Pine. Becoming a B Corp is the clearest demonstration possible that we live up to our values. As a company, we’re going to continue doing what we can to make the world a better place. We’re going to continue to use our technology and expertise to help governments and environmentally responsible companies in the fight against climate change,” said Kallal.

Wild + Pine joins the impressive ranks of multinational brands such as Patagonia, Danone, and Toms Shoes in their certification. To view Wild + Pine’s B Impact Report, please visit www.bcorporation.net/directory/wild-pine

Wild + Pine is Canada’s first full-circle Nature-based Solutions climate action provider. The Alberta-based company uses innovative technology to create the old-growth forests of the future. Wild + Pine is contributing to the restoration of Canada’s natural land through three business units:

  • Wild + Pine Environmental Services support the reclamation and regeneration of disturbed landscapes.
  • Wild + Pine Bioprism is an advanced vertical greenhouse for tree seedling production that also serves as an integrated research and innovation space.
  • Wild + Pine Sustainability helps clients to navigate the emerging carbon market and offers verified nature-based carbon offsets.

Second only to oceans, forests are the world’s largest natural storehouse of carbon and planting trees is one of the most effective ways to fight climate change. Trees remove carbon dioxide from the air through the process of photosynthesis. Reforestation, in other words, is the natural solution to one of the greatest challenges facing governments and businesses.

Since founding the business in 2011, Chris specializes in the development of strategic sustainability initiatives focusing on Nature Based Solutions (NBS). His direction of Wild + Pine is centred around the creation of opportunities in environment, social, and governance (ESG) responsibility and the convergence of impact technology. Chris’ creativity and value generation are the hallmarks of his business strategy and is the commitment made to Wild + Pine’s extensive list of corporate partners, dedicated service providers, and staff. Chris holds a degree and diploma in Forest Management, is a regulated Forest Professional within the province of Alberta, and in 2018 was recognized as one of Edmonton’s Top 40 Under 40 business leaders.
